Principal's Message for January

Happy New Year

A new year, a renewed focus on student achievement. Our current school goal is to improve all students’ achievement in reading.

What We Are Doing to Improve Reading: Our staff (classroom teachers, LSS teacher, ELL teacher, EA’s and Indigenous Support Worker) provide targeted individual, small group and whole class reading instruction daily. We teach students explicit comprehension strategies for both fiction and non-fiction texts. Resources such as “The Comprehension Toolkit” and “Story Champs” are combined with teaching frameworks “Daily 5” and reading conferences. Students are taught a common reading language and strategies that they further develop as they progress from grade to grade. Staff collaborate and use professional development days to further support their instructional practices.

How Families Can Be Involved: Parents are asked to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night to/with your child. Family commitments and activities can make this difficult to do at times. Make reading a part of your child’s bedtime routine to help reinforce the joy and importance of reading. Modeling reading for your child helps set a positive example; turn off electronics and read as a family. Make reading a fun, family outing by regularly visiting the FVR Library to borrow books, in addition to the books your children bring home from the school library.  You can also listen to audio books on family trips. Thank you for helping our students achieve their literacy goals!

Further updates on the development of our school goal will be shared on our school website and communicated at PAC meetings.
