Halq'emeylem Language Program

Language Classes at Upper Sumas

First Nation students from Upper Sumas Elementary have been working hard to keep the Halq’emeylem language alive.  The children from Sumas First Nation come to school early each day and attend extra classes to learn their language and get extra help with homework.  Each Tuesday the students meet with their Halq’emeylem teacher, Ms. Seymour, and together they practice learning new words, greetings and phrases.  “There are only a few speakers left of the Sto:lo that speak our language and being connected to our language and culture is so important for our children,” said Ms. Seymour.
